# Types of Deals

Operate supports different deal types to reflect how your sales process works in practice.

## New business

A deal with a company that isn't yet a customer. This is the most common type and represents a new revenue opportunity.

## Expansion

A deal to grow revenue within an existing customer — upsells, cross-sells, or adding seats/capacity.

## Renewal

A deal tracking the renewal of an existing contract. Renewals help you forecast recurring revenue and flag accounts at risk of churning.

## Choosing the right type

Setting the correct deal type helps you:

* **Filter your pipeline** — view only new business, expansions, or renewals
* **Track metrics accurately** — new ARR vs. expansion ARR vs. renewal ARR
* **Tailor your process** — different deal types may have different stages and stakeholders
